GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, in partnership with the West Michigan Dahlia Society, is inviting the community this weekend to discover various flower forms blooming with color.

The two-day dahlia show kicks off Saturday, Aug. 26, from noon - 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 27, from 11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., at Meijer Gardens’ first-floor Covenant Learning Center. Admission is free for all.

Meijer Gardens collaborates with local plant clubs every year to launch a collection of flower shows. Each show is free and open to the public.

“I work closely with the team members to help set up their events and really give them a beautiful setting to share their knowledge of beautiful blooms with the public,” said Eve Boyer, curator of horticultural and environmental education at Meijer Gardens.

Boyer told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press the two-day show features dahlia horticulture, seedling and artistic arrangement displays submitted by the West Michigan Dahlia Society and other local society members.

“What’s amazing about this show is you have some tiny blooms that look like little pom-poms to some very large blooms that are as large as a dinner plate,” she said.

Ahead of the event, each of the submitted flowers will be judged by accredited teams of the American Dahlia Society. Once patrons are able to come in at noon, they will see which blooms won awards.

The goal of the plant show collaborations with local garden clubs is to share the community the West Michigan Dahlia Society has created in the region.

“I hope everybody walks away inspired by the beauty of these flowers,” Boyer added. “And maybe become interested in getting involved with the society itself.”
